It’s Tuesday, Oppo. Time to gear up and get going.

This morning we have what looks like a factory fresh Vought F4U-1 Corsair, identifiable by the early “birdcage” canopy. The F4U-1A introduced a taller canopy with just two frames, while the single-piece “blown” clear-view canopy didn’t show up until the F4U-1D in April 1944. The early blue over grey camouflage pattern, and the plain white star roundel, lacking bars on either side, place this aircraft sometime between May 1942 and June 1943.

Hollywood vs Reality: Robert Conrad as Pappy Boyington on the left, the real Pappy Boyington on the right.

The real Greg Boyington did not have a Hollywood face.

The last piston engine dogfight had both sides flying Corsairs as late as 1969. Kinda crazy.

Not a hollywood kind of face u nless that hollywood face is Norm Grabowski. Norm, who should be noted, came into Hollywood from outside, and even at that might have been prettier (in a Big Polish Lunkhead sort of way) than Boyington.

Hollywood always needs a Joe Palooka. Looks like he was quite the gearhead.

Started a whole hot rod recipe, popularized skull shift-knobs, swung on his car’s stardom to show up as a memorable mook opposite Dean Jones and Tommy Kirk - I have to say he’s a true American original.

My all-time fav WW2 fighter. I fly out of Sikorsky Airport in Stratford CT where they were built. They’re restoring an FG-1D from San Salvador  that sat on a pole as a gate guard there for many years. Still in progress.
